Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a man Tuesday afternoon in Newark’s South Ward.
According to preliminary information, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office responded to the area of 17th Street and Madison Avenue just before 4 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire.
When South Ward police units arrived at the scene, they found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

First responders performed CPR, but the man was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe that the black male suspect fled the area on a dirt bike after firing several rounds at the victim.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation. No arrests have been announced, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim.
