Police in Newark are on an active search for several suspects who attempted a robbery in Newark’s Vailsburg section then fired shots at the victim Sunday morning.
According to police, the male suspects -who occupied a stolen Dodge Charger rental car- approached the victim in the 100 block of Columbia Avenue near Grove Terrace at approximately 7:55 a.m.
Police say the suspects attempted to rob the victim then fired a shot in his direction before speeding away from the scene towards the Garden State Parkway’s southbound lanes.
The victim did not suffer any injuries, but the bullet caused damage to a vehicle at that location police said.
Officers searching city-wide were successful in finding the unoccupied car about an hour later on Kent Street.
Police say the Enterprise rental car was stolen from a location in Irvington Township.
The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
