Alleged Drug Dealer Arrested in Newark

Newark New Jersey

Essex County Sheriff's officers arrested a 53-year-old Newark man yesterday, wanted on drug trafficking charges, according to authorities.

Saturday night, officers pulled over a Volkswagen Passat, driven by Robert Botts, which matched the description of a vehicle used in multiple armed robberies around the city.

Once officers approached the vehicle, Botts took off down South Orange Avenue.

Officers recognized Botts as a suspect wanted on an open arrest warrant for drug trafficking, initiating the car chase.

However, officers immediately terminated the chase due to the danger to other drivers and pedestrian, according to police.

On Monday, officers spotted Botts on South 11th Street. As officers approached he took off on foot.

Botts was arrested shortly after on the open warrant.

According to police, he was found in possession of 92 glassine envelopes of heroin stamped 'THE KING'.

Botts was charged with resisting arrest, eluding police, hindering apprehension, drug possession and distribution charges and various traffic violations after escaping from officers.

He is currently being held at the Essex County Jail on $80,000 cash bond. A new bail will be set after arraignment scheduled for later this week.
