ALERT: Doctors Warn Women to Wash Eyelash Extensions to Avoid Lash Lice

New Jersey

Doctors around the regional are reporting an increase in women with Demodex, also known as "lash lice" due to not cleaning the cosmetic extensions.

According to optometrist Dr. Sairah Malik, bacteria buildup can lead to a dangerous eye infection mainly because of sanitary concerns.

Dr.Sairah Malik said symptoms include itchiness, redness, inflammation and lice -which live on hair follicles- can jump to other parts of the body just like hair lice.

"Generally, the idea when you have eyelash extensions is that people are afraid to touch them or wash them because they're afraid the eyelash will fall out," according to Dr. Sairah Malik.

Doctors recommend that you clean your eyelids with a tea tree-based cleanser ad give the extensions a break now and then.
