After School Brawl Locked Down Newark Elementary School in the North Ward

By: Jackie Amorine

Police reported no severe injuries after several fights broke out near a school in Newark's North Ward Thursday afternoon.

The chaotic confrontation happened just after 3 p.m. while students were dismissed at the Rafael Hernandez School located in the 300 block of Broadway.

School security requested extra police assistance after several adults, later identified as parents, reportedly participated in fighting with students, which ultimately forced school administration to lock down the building to secure staff and students attending after-school programs.

Parents told RLS Media that weapons were involved, but police have not immediately confirmed firearms.

The situation was placed under control in under a half hour.

An investigation is underway into what caused the fight.
