AccuWeather Alert: Flood Threat, Heavy Rain to Drench North Jersey Monday

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Good morning, Jersey.

We’re waking up to an AccuWeather Alert for flooding and rain-soaked roads across Newark and much of North Jersey as a wet start to the workweek takes hold.

Rain is already moving through the region, with about a half-inch of rainfall expected early.

By the time the storm system moves out, many communities could receive more than 2 inches of rain, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

It’s shaping up to be a very wet Monday across much of North Jersey.

The heaviest rainfall is expected between approximately 9:00 a.m. and midday, when periods of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms could significantly reduce visibility.

If you’re heading out, be sure to bring an umbrella or poncho.

According to the National Weather Service, today will bring periods of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall.

Temperatures will remain steady near 72 degrees with an east wind of 9 to 11 mph. Rain chances are 100 percent, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall possible.

Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue. Overnight lows will be around 65 degrees with a northeast wind of 9 to 11 mph and gusts up to 21 mph. Rain chances remain at 80 percent, with another quarter to half-inch of rainfall possible.

Allow yourself extra travel time this morning, watch for ponding on roadways, and use caution around flooded streets and areas where debris may have collected from the heavy rain.

Have a safe Monday and stay weather aware.
