Fire officials in Newark are investigating the cause of a fire that ignited inside a senior living building in the city's downtown Sunday night.

Firefighters were dispatched to Essex Plaza, located at 1060 Broad Street, to investigate reports of a fire on the upper floors just before 9:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, officials on the scene activated a second alarm for manpower after they observed fire coming from an apartment on the 6th floor.

Crews made their way to the seat of the fire reported in Apartment 65, where flames caused thick smoke to emanate from the residence while crews extinguished the fire.

Firefighters gained control of the fire in about an hour, and a search of the building indicated no trapped or severely injured occupants.

One firefighter was treated for minor injuries.
