17-Year-Old Newark Robbery Suspect Accused of Assaulting Police

A 17-year old male from Newark was arrested after authorities say he assaulted police following a robbery today.

According to police, at approximately 1:45 a.m., police responded to Park Avenue and Culter Street on a burglary call.

Upon arrival police determined a male juvenile entered a residence and discharged a weapon after being confronted by residents, who held him until police arrived.

Police recovered the suspect's handgun from inside of the residence.

Police said as a result of injuries sustained during the fight with residents, the suspect was transported to University Hospital, where he spat on and assaulted two police officers who were guarding him following his arrest.

The juvenile is charged with two counts each of aggravated assault on a police officer, throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer and terroristic threats against police officers.

The charges emanating from his encounter with the residents/civi lians ar e two each of robbery and aggravated assault and one count of Unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
