17-Year-Old Boy Caught with Drugs, Gun in Newark

Police officials in Newark commends 5th Precinct officers for apprehending a 17-year old male who was in possession of a weapon and drugs today.

According to police, at approximately 10:15 a.m., police responded to the 100-block of Clinton Avenue on a Crime Stoppers report of a male with a weapon.

Responding officers observed a male who fit the caller’s description of the suspect.

Upon becoming aware of police presence, the male ran onto Murray Street and then onto Brunswick Street while holding the handgun in his waistband. The gun fell onto the street and police arrested the juvenile.

Along with the handgun, which was reported stolen, the suspect was found in possession of 24 vials of suspected CDS cocaine.

Police charged the teen with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, CDS Possession and Resisting Arrest.

“Thanks to a Crime Stoppers caller, this stolen and illegal handgun was recovered from the hands of a minor and taken off our streets,” Director Ambrose said. “I’m grateful that members of the community are partnering with police to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
