14-Year-Old Charged With Murdering Taxi Driver in Newark

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that a juvenile has been arrested and charged with the murder of 45-year-old taxicab driver Rodrigo Berru.

Berru was fatally shot on Aug. 21 in the 300 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark.

A 14-year-old juvenile from Newark has been charged with murdering Berru. He is also charged with felony murder, conspiracy, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

In a separate incident, the same juvenile along with another 14-year-old is charged conspiracy and carjacking in connection with Aug. 16 incident that occurred on 4th Avenue and North 6th Street also in Newark.

The names of the juveniles are not being released at this time because of their ages. They have been remanded to the Essex County Youth House.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
