A late night attempt to rescue two 12-year-old girls from the ocean in Belmar had one of the girls suffering fatally, and the other rushed to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she listed in critical condition.
Two police officers pulled the girls from the water at around 7:15 p.m. after they rushed to the 9th and Ocean avenues side of the waters where they arrived and found the high current pulled the girls under according to preliminary reports.
The girls went for a swim with no lifeguard present or adult supervision reports said.
A frantic search for a possible third victim was unfounded authorities said.
The incident remains under investigation.
