12 Arrested for Weapons Possession in Newark

Police in Newark announced that officers recovered 19 weapons and made 12 related arrests in the last week, from December 6 to December 12. 

“I thank our residents for partnering with Police in helping us to remove these illegal guns from our streets,” Director Ambrose said. “We would have more victims and more grieving families if it wasn’t for their great work.”

Police say suspects were arrested during the period and each is charged with separate incidents of unlawful possession of a weapon among other charges: 

  • Zakie T. Hinton, 19, and Bomani S. Duncan, 23, both of Bloomfield. Hinton, arrested 12-6-20, also faces a charge of receiving stolen property. Duncan, arrested on 12-11-20, similarly faces a charge of receiving stolen property.
  • Alsalik Leverson, 18, of Irvington, was arrested on 12-08-20. He faces an additional charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.

Newark residents arrested include:

  • A 16-year-old male arrested 12-6-20, who faces additional charges of CDS distribution within 1,000-ft of a school, marijuana possession, and possession of a prohibited weapon.
  • Kain Kourouma 20, arrested 12-8-20, faces additional charges of CDS possession, CDS distribution within 1,000-ft of a school and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • Elijah Muhammad-Outen, 21, arrested 12-9-20, faces further charges of CDS possession and two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.
  • Tommy Francois, 22, arrested 12-10-20, faces additional charges of robbery, kidnapping and criminal restraint.
  • Charles Curry, 45, also arrested on 12-10-20, faces additional charges of marijuana possession, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
  • Fredrick L. Smith, 44, arrested 12-10-20, faces further charges of aggravated assault, obstruction of justice and resisting arrests.
  • Hassan D. Fair, 24, arrested 12-11-20, faces no additional charges.
  • Dominick Carpio, 30, also arrested 12-11-20, faces additional charges of CDS possession, CDS distribution, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • Tawan Hatten, 27, arrested 12-11-20, faces additional charges of marijuana possession, CDS distribution within 1,000-ft. of a school and possession of a prohibited weapon.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
