Elizabeth Firefighters Honored for Heroic Rescue

Last night during the annual National Night Out celebration in the City of Elizabeth, firefighters were recognized for rescuing a woman in a four-alarm fire.

Members of the Elizabeth FMBA Local 9 were acknowledged by City Council for their efforts that saved a 55- year old woman’s life in a 4-alarm fire on Jersey Avenue in June of this year along with Elizabeth Fire Department Deputy Chief C. Whitney Merrill, who commanded the operations that led to this woman’s rescue and eventual full recovery.

“In my short time on the Elizabeth Fire Department each of these honored individuals have provided me with invaluable guidance and leadership,” said FMBA Local 9 Vice President David Bialas, “their efforts, witnessed by many, came as no surprise to me as they selflessly dedicate themselves to the Fire Department and citizens of our city day in and day out.”

National Night Out is designed to increase the awareness of crime and drug prevention within neighborhoods while strengthening police community partnerships. The Elizabeth Fire Department put on a vehicle extrication demonstration while fire and EMS apparatus were on hand for members of the community to tour. FMBA Local 9 partnered with the Elizabeth Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 4 to donate and provide hot dogs and refreshments for those in attendance.
