UPDATE: Pedestrian Killed by Car on Route 440 in Jersey City

According to police, Monday, at approximately 9:20 p.m., while on patrol, a Jersey City Police Officer stopped to investigate an object in the road on northbound Route 440 in Jersey City near Kellogg Street.

Officials say the officer found a male lying in the roadway at that location as well as two vehicles that had stopped nearby.

The male, who has not been identified at this time, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at approximately 10:05 p.m. according to police.

The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department determined that the male was a pedestrian and that he was struck by a 2018 Chevrolet Trax operated by a female driver who remained at the scene.

The initial investigation also determined that the pedestrian was struck a second time by a 2018 Toyota 4Runner operated by a male driver who remained at the scene and attempted to render aid to the pedestrian.

Police say the second driver has been identified as an off-duty Jersey City Police Officer.

The events surrounding the collision remain under investigation. No summonses have been issued at this time.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.
