UPDATE: Multiple Gunshots Strike, Fatally Injures 29-Year-Old Newark Man

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Newark earlier today.

According to authorities, at approximately 2:40 this morning, Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North 5th street on reports of a shooting in progress.

Arriving officers observed a vehicle in the middle of the street.

Authorities said within the vehicle, officers located an unresponsive male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:11 am, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as Denzel Uwubiti, 29, of Newark.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
