Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Belleville Police Chief Mark Minichini announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating a home invasion that resulted in a fatal shooting.
Authorities said, last night at approximately 10 p.m., a resident was shot in his home on Berton Place during what appears to be a home invasion.
The preliminary investigation indicates that an armed man entered the home of a resident when a struggle ensued and the resident was shot.
However, the resident then fatally shot the would-be burglar.
Police said after being shot, the unidentified burglar fled and collapsed in Nutley.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
