UPDATE: Authorities Identify Man Killed by Gunfire in Newark’s South Ward

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/ Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting of Mr. Jamil Thompson, 23, of Newark.

Authorities say at approximately 8:12 pm yesterday Newark police officers responded to a report of shots being fired in the 100 block of Huntington Terrace.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered Thompson suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 pm yesterday.

No further information is available at this time.

No arrests have been made.
