Two in Custody for Murder of 63-Year-Old Carteret Man

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief John Pieczyski of the Carteret Police Department said two men from Carteret were charged yesterday in the fatal shooting of another Carteret resident.

Miguel Delgado Benitez, 21, and Juan Carlos Marrero-Cardona, 32,

were both charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, hindering prosecution and unlawful possession of a weapon in the death of Briccio Guevara, 63, on Dec. 6th.

Bail was set at $1 million dollars for both Benitez and Cardona and they are being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center.

The defendants were charges during an investigation by Detective David Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Thomas O’Connor of the Carteret Police Department.

During the investigation, it was determined that Guevara, who was returning home, was fatally shot and found at the entry way of his home. Police were alerted when neighbors called, reporting the sound of gunfire.

Guevara was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, where he was pronounced dead shortly after he was discovered at 12:01 a.m.

The investigation is active and is continuing.
