Two Arrested for Weapons Possession, Occupying Stolen Vehicle in Newark; Ironbound Car Thieves Arrested in Irvington

Police in Newark stopped a vehicle in the area of 14th Ave. and South 10th Street for motor vehicle violations shortly before 1 a.m. 

After a check of the vehicle's registration, police learned that the vehicle was reported stolen. The driver and the passenger was immediately placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle had police confiscate a loaded handgun inside the vehicle.

The suspects were transported to the city lock up. 

In an early Sunday morning incident, a report of a vehicle that was stolen in the city's Ironbound Section had police chase down and arrest two suspects responsible in Irvington. 

The incident began after a red Jeep Liberty was reported stolen from a residence on Chestnut Street near Railroad Ave. had police canvas the area for the vehicle. 

Police caught up with the vehicle a short time later where they began to follow it when the occupants refused to stop the vehicle.

The suspects bailed from the vehicle in the area of Springfield Ave. and 21st Street Irvington where officers converged on the area, giving chase and arresting two suspects a short distance away. 

Police believe that the suspects are responsible for a string of armed robberies in the Ironbound Section.
