Suspect Fleeing Police Drops Loaded Gun in Newark’s Central Ward

Newark

Police took a male into custody and charged him with possession of a gun this afternoon in the city’s West Ward.

According to police, witnesses in the area of 18th Avenue in Bergen Street called police when they spotted two males with a weapon just before 12:30 p.m.

When police arrived in the area, they spotted two suspects leaving from that location and began a brief pursuit of one of the males through the housing complex.

Officers caught up with both suspects but held one of them in the 30’s block of Muhammad Ali Avenue while police canvassed the area for the weapon.

Police say residents found the gun in the vicinity of 297 18th Avenue and a check of surveillance cameras showed one of the males in possession of the weapon prior to running away according to reports.

The second person was released by the police.

Police are continuing the investigation.
