DEVELOPING NEWARK: Police Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Newark's South Ward; Injuries

There is an active and ongoing investigation underway in Newark's South Ward as police attempt to understand circumstances behind a police-involved shooting that left one person injured during the overnight hours.

Details regarding the shooting are pending a police information request, but according to preliminary reports, police were called to the 200 block of Leslie Street to investigate reports of shots fired at around 12:45 a.m.

Newark Police responded and requested EMS after locating a male suffering a bullet wound to the stomach at that location.

The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment and the extent of his injuries have not been confirmed as of 5:40 a.m.

Newark Police officials confirmed that the shooting involved a New Jersey corrections police officer who was not struck by gunfire during the incident.
