Wrong-Way Driver Crashes on US 1&9 in Rahway

An early morning crash that occurred on US Highway 1&9 in Rahway sent two people to the hospital.

According to police, at approximately 4:43 a.m., emergency responders were called to a motor vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of the highway between W. Milton Avenue and Randolph Avenue.

Upon their arrival, a preliminary investigation revealed, that a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck operated by a male Hillside resident and a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by a male in Woodbridge, collided head-on in the southbound lanes of the highway.

Police said a further investigation, revealed that the 2005 Dodge Ram was traveling in the wrong direction -heading northbound in the southbound lanes- without headlights on.

According to police, EMS transported the driver of the GMC to an area hospital with injuries to his left leg while the Hillside driver sustained internal injuries.

Police closed the southbound lanes of the highway from Hancock Street and Randall Avenue for approximately four hours while they investigated the cause of the crash.
