Police Arrest Man who Possessed Gun in Newark's Upper West Ward

Newark

Police took a man into custody after an investigation led to a Newark West Ward community on Sunday evening.

According to preliminary reports, police were notified of a man who was in the area armed with a gun in the vicinity of Alexander Street and Lindsley Avenue at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Several police officers arrived in the area and found a suspect fitting the description then made the arrests. EMS treated the alleged armed suspect for an unknown injury that he obtained during the arrest according to reports.

**NOTE:** The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified of the arrest because of its close proximity of a Friday evening homicide of a city resident.

In that incident, officials say, Mr. Neal Jacobs, 32, of Newark was shot in the area of 96 Lindsley Avenue and a second male was also shot. According to police, both males were transported to University Hospital where Jacobs was pronounced dead at 8:15 PM and the other victim survived.

Essex County authorities did not confirm a connection between Sunday evening's arrest and the death of Mr. Neal Jacobs. "At this time, the suspect was picked up and charged for possessing a weapon".
