Police Arrest Man for Selling Alcohol Illegally in Newark's Ironbound Section

Police officials in Newark are reporting that members of the Vice Task Force arrested Mr. Silvestre B. Penas, 61, of Newark, for operating an illegal alcohol establishment yesterday.

According to a statement released by police, acting on complaints about the illegal sale of alcohol, officers responded to Caldas Restaurant, located at 293 Wilson Avenue, to investigate.

Officials say officers observed an employee behind a counter who directed them to the owner, Silvestre Penas, who was unable to produce a valid New Jersey liquor license.

Police say they observed large quantities of beer, wine and other bottles of alcohol inside the establishment during their investigation.

Police immediately arrested Silvestre confiscated all the all liquor and beer with $527.00 in proceeds from the illegal sale of alcohol.

Authorities charged Penas with Maintaining an Unlicensed Liquor Establishment, Unlawful Possession of Alcohol and Alcohol and Illegal Sale of Alcohol.

These charges are merely accusations.

This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
