Overnight Violence Leaves Five Shot, One Dead in Newark

There is a homicide investigation underway in Newark as police are looking into five shooting that left at least one person dead in the city overnight.

It the fatal shooting incident, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the 500 block of South 17th Street shortly before 3 a.m. where arriving police units canvassed the area and found a blood trail that lead to a male victim in a yard struck to the head by gunfire according to reports.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene as police taped off the area searching for evidence and possible suspects.

Authorities are attempting to determine the motive for the fatal shooting.

Up in the city's West Ward, gunfire erupted in the 300 block of Kerrigan Boulevard sending police to the scene where they located one person suffering injury from gunfire according to reports.

The victim was transported to University Hospital where his injuries were not immediately reported as life threatening.

There were no arrests reported.

Several blocks away, in the 60's block of Richelieu Terrace, a man reportedly being chased down a residential street by a gunman was struck by gunfire according to residents.

As the victim ran for his life, the gunman fired multiple times at him residents said.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital where his injuries were non-life threatening reports said.

Police are searching for the suspect responsible for the shooting.

A shooting in the 400 block of South 15th Street had a male victim shot several times at that location.

The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. sending police to the scene where they found the man struck to the leg and back by gunfire according to reports.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital in serious but stable condition.

There were other instances of shots fired that had cops at several locations, throughout the city, including one on Sanford Avenue at around 3 a.m.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the fatal shooting while Newark Police is looking into the other shootings.

It is not immediately clear if the shootings are connected at this time.
