Newark Public School Student Perseveres, Improves, SUCCEED; Drummer Commits to Delaware HBCU

New Jersey, meet the talented Ms. Amaya Anderson-Datus of Newark New Jersey.

Family and friends say on May 1, 2019, University High School Senior Amaya Anderson-Datus committed to being a Hornet at Delaware State University. In addition, she received a band scholarship and will be on the Percussion Drumline for The Eye Of The Storm Marching Band for the 2019-2020 school year.

According to University High School Instrumental Music Director Ishwann Dixon, Amaya played the snare and bass drum at University High School Band for three years. She cultured 25 basic snare drum rudiments and has acquired skills at reading music and it’s theories.

During her school years, Dixon said Amaya was an Assistant Drum Captain for her Junior year and once she became a high school senior, she obtained the position as Drum Captain.

According to Dixon, Amaya has led numerous classes which involved warming up and rehearsing with the band. Overall, Amaya has strong leadership skills and is well respected by peers. Her nickname, the “Heavy Hitter”, has proven its value.

As a former 2018 graduate of the 'ALL STARS PROJECT OF NEW JERSEY DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL FOR YOUTH,' Amaya received an internship at fortune 500 company Investors Bank according to Dixon.

A 2018 Summer intern, she worked for the VP of Information Security. Amaya learned various tasks which allowed her to get a head start in the IT field at the development school.

As a University High School senior, she has received accolades for Leadership, Mathematics and Science.

Amaya graduated from University High School on June 18, 2019. In the Summer of 2019, Amaya will begin Band Camp and reside on campus.

In the Fall of 2019, she will start her major in Computer Science with hopes of working in the Information Technology field following her mother’s career path.
