Police established a crime scene in a Newark South Ward neighborhood after they received several calls reporting shots fired early this morning.
Multiple police units canvassed the vicinity of Leslie Street and Nye Avenue after gunfire rang out at around 2:30 a.m. A search of the area had officers locate shell casings but no victim.
Police eventually found the victim in the area of Springfield Avenue and South 10th Street suffering a gunshot wound to the chest according to reports.
EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital in serious condition. Authorities believe the victim suffered their injury at the Leslie Street location, but it is not clear how the victim made it to the place she was found.
There is an active and ongoing investigation.
