UPDATE: Newark Police Arrest Man for Eight Theft from Auto Incidents on Hillside Avenue

Newark

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose is reporting the arrest of Hurlon D. McLean, 52, of Newark, in connection with eight incidents of theft from auto that occurred in the 100 block of Hillside Avenue during the overnight hours of December 8 to December 9.

“This suspect has a long history of committing thefts from autos,” Director Ambrose said. “But breaking into eight vehicles at once means he has not been rehabilitated and still is a threat to the community. In fact, this suspect was released from incarceration weeks prior to this incident as a consequence of COVID-19. I applaud our detectives for quickly identifying him as a suspect and apprehending him so that he is once again removed from our streets.”

According to police, each of the eight victims reported that the rear passenger glass door of their vehicle had been shattered and that damage was done to the door moldings. Items stolen from the vehicles included loose change and cleaning products.

Police report that McLean was arrested yesterday and faces eight counts of burglary, seven counts of theft, eight counts of criminal mischief and one count of possession of burglary tools.

These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
