Multi-Vehicle East Rutherford Crash Kills Off-Duty Union City Cop

Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced today that the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the East Rutherford Police Department are conducting an investigation into the cause of a fatal motor vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Lyndhurst man.

According to authorities, at approximately 11:12 p.m., on Saturday, May 13, East Rutherford police responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash on Route 3 East in East Rutherford.

Police ultimately determined that a total of four vehicles were involved in the collision.

A total of five people were treated for relatively minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

Tragically, 44-year-old, off-duty Union City Police Officer Mark Zeitounian of Lyndhurst was killed in the collision.

Prosecutor Grewal extends his deepest condolences to the Zeitounian Family and to the men and women of the Union City Police Department at this extraordinarily difficult time.

Authorities said, at present, the cause of the collision remains under investigation and no criminal charges have been filed against any driver.

Prosecutor Grewal would like to thank both the East Rutherford Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department for their cooperation in this investigation.
