Man Shot in the Head Near Bar in Newark's West Ward

A violent overnight in Newark that had multiple people shot around the city, and at least two confirmed fatalities, ended the night with a man suffering life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the head on an avenue in the city.

The incident happened near the Cozy Corner Bar located on South Orange Avenue and South 12th Street shortly before 11 p.m. sending to police to the scene where they found the male victim struck to the head by gunfire.

EMS rushed the unconscious male to University Hospital where he is reported to be in critical condition.

Police officers canvassing the scene for evidence located several shell casings at that location.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

Earlier in the evening, police responded to several South Ward shootings that had about three people shot and two suffering fatally according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Police also investigated reports of shots fired on Frelinghuysen Avenue, Dewey Street, and on South 16th Street where police arrived to find a house struck by bullets and other evidence that indicated a possible victim.

All of the shootings are under investigation.
