Man Shoots Victim During Newark Carjacking Captured by Hillside Cops

A violent carjacking that happened overnight in Newark has the suspect shoot the victim according to authorities.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of John Cottle, 46, of Newark for a carjacking and shooting that occurred today.

Accoridng to Ambrose, at approximately 12:00 a.m., a male victim driving in the area of South 11th Street and Woodland Avenue stopped to drop off a passenger when a male suspect entered his vehicle brandishing a handgun.

The suspect ordered the victim to drive and then ordered him out of the vehicle at South 13th Street and Avon Avenue. As the victim exited the vehicle, the suspect shot him.

The victim was transported to University Hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound and released.

Hillside police officers observed the carjacked vehicle in the area of Stecher Street and Lyons Avenue and detained the suspect until Newark Police arrived.

Detectives determined that Cottle, who was in possession of a handgun along with the victim’s vehicle and personal property, is a suspect in this carjacking and shooting.

He was arrested and charged with Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Carjacking, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Possession of CDS (marijuana) and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapons Possession.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
