Newark Man Returned to Harrison Neighborhood to Steal Car He Took Two Weeks Ago Police say

Hudson County authorities took a Newark resident into custody and charged him with attempting to steal a vehicle in the Town of Harrison on Sunday morning.

According to a statement released by police, the unusual incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m., where a caller indicated that someone was breaking into a family member's vehicle.

According to police, the vehicle was stolen then recovered two weeks earlier, but authorities never located an extra set of car keys that were left inside the car.

Harrison Police officials said the male actor, positively identified as Mr. Nasir Darby-Berry, 19, of Newark ran from the scene after the unidentified resident spotted him.

According to police, officers obtained Darby-Berry's description from the witness and was captured by an East Newark police officer near the scene.

Police say when they searched Darby-Berry, they found the stolen keys in his possession.

Authorities charged him with Burglary, Receiving Stolen Property and Criminal Attempt.

Police are attempting to determine if Darby-Berry is responsible for damaging six vehicles by smashing windows/windshields on the in the 200 block of Sussex Street between the hours of midnight and 1 a.m.

Harrison Police said there are no thefts reported from inside any of the targeted cars.

The incident remains under investigation.
