Man, Alleged Accomplice Wanted in String of Newark Business Robberies Arrested

A 19-year-old Newark man wanted for at least five business robberies was taken into custody, police announced this morning.

According to authorities, Sunday at approximately 11:23 a.m., officers responded to Bergen Beauty Supply, located at 1002 Bergen Street, on a robbery call.

Upon arrival, police learned a male suspect entered the store along with a 16-year old juvenile, and both robbed the store at gunpoint.

Police canvassing the area located the suspects in the 100-block of Wainwright Street and arrested the pair.

Police said that they found a replica handgun in the vacinity.

The male suspect, later identified as Mr. Jamal Williams, 19, of Newark, and the juvenile were both arrested and charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy and resisting arrest.

Police suspect Mr. Williams for armed robberies of two businesses on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Ecowas Food Market, 660 Clinton Avenue, and at Crown Supermarket, 821 Clinton Avenue.

Police further charged him with two armed business robberies that occurred on Monday, June 5, 2017 at AWS Wholesale Supply, 302 Osborne Terrace, and at Dunkin Donuts, located at 13 Court Street.

Yesterday, police arrested Williams’ accomplice in the robberies at Ecowas Food Market and Crown Supermarket.

Authorities barged Mr. Larry Williams, 30, of Newark, with two counts each of Robbery, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Conspiracy. Jamal Williams and Larry Williams are not related.

These charges are merely accusations.

Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“I commend the detectives of the Robbery Unit for their tireless work in investigating these robberies as well as the officers who apprehended this suspect,” Director Ambrose said. “We will continue to make use of every available investigative resource to ensure that our streets are safe.”
