FINAL UPDATE: Orange Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide for Crash that Killed Newark Fire Department Employee

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Anthony F. Ambrose has announced that authorities are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in Newark early Saturday morning .

According to Authorities, shortly before 3:00 am, Newark police and fire units, along with emergency medical services personnel from University Hospital, responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Meeker Street.

Authorities said arriving units observed that three vehicles were involved in the crash.

The trapped driver of one of the vehicles was unresponsive when fire and EMS personnel and was extricated him authorities said.

Medics pronounced 49-year-old Jason Edwards dead at the scene at 3:45 am Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit said.

Based on observations of the police officers on the scene, as well as a result to of a preliminary investigation by detectives from the Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, authorities charged the driver of one of the cars with Vehicular Homicide and Driving while Intoxicated.

Police identified him as Colby Dessources of Orange according to Fennelly.

Dessources will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in Essex County Central Judicial Processing Court (CJP).

A female passenger in Dessouces's vehicle was also injured in the crash. She was treated and released at an area hospital Chief Fennelly said.
