East Orange Man Allegedly Lied About Newark Carjacking

East Orange Newark

A man who said his car was stolen at gunpoint Friday, has been arrested for filing a false police report, police announced Monday.

According to a statement by police, Mr. Evan L. Alston, 22, of East Orange, on August 18th told police that he was the victim of a carjacking at Fairmount and South Orange avenues at around 3:30 a.m.

Police said Mr. Alston drove a black 2010 BMW.

As a result of the investigation , detectives determined that Mr. Alston fabricated the story after the vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Central Avenue and Grove Street, in East Orange, shortly before he claimed the carjacking.

Police arrested and charged Alston with making false reports to law enforcement.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
