DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Firefighters Respond to Manhole Fires Near NJPAC in Downtown Newark

Firefighters are on the scene of an underground fire that ignited near The NJ Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark.

According to preliminary reports, several manhole covers began to explode near the intersection of Park Place and Rector Street sending firefighters to the scene where crews found smoke billowing from underground at around 3 p.m.

Police closed several streets around NJPAC as firefighters began to investigate the cause of the blaze.

PSEG arrived at the scene and began to shut down electric underground and assess the situation.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause is under investigation.
