DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Car Slams into Pole on Route 1&9 in Newark; Severe Injuries

Authorities are reporting severe injuries for victims of a crash that had a car leave an Essex County highway and slam into a pole during the overnight hours.

According to police, the early Sunday morning collision happened at approximately 4:53 a.m. in the Northbound lanes of 1&9 at McClellan Street.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a collision with injuries at that location.

When rescue crews arrived at the scene, they found a severely damaged vehicle wrapped around a pole with at least one occupant trapped inside.

Police say one other severely injured person was out of the vehicle, but it is not confirmed if this victim was ejected at this time.

NFD later joined Elizabeth Firefighters for the extrication of the victim trapped inside the car.

Both victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment and remain in serious condition.
