Car Pursuit Ends in Bailout, Suspect Jumping into Passaic River in Newark

A pursuit of a vehicle that ended on McCarter Highway had two suspects bail from the car with one of the suspects jumping into the Passaic River this evening.

According to initial reports, police began following a vehicle that refused to stop for traffic violations at around 9:50 p.m. when the suspects stopped on McCarter Highway near Center Street and bailed out.

With police in pursuit, one of the suspects reportedly jumped into the river and began to swim away reports said.

A police officer reportedly entered the water and immediately captured the suspect.

Police are looking for a second suspect who has ben identified as a black male who was last seen with red pants when he fled the scene towards Mulberry Street.

The police officer and the suspect were transported to University Hospital for evaluations.

There were no injuries reported.
