BREAKING: Men Sentenced in Fatal Short Hills Mall Carjacking

Short Hills

The three men charged in connection with the deadly carjacking at The Mall at Short Hills were sentenced Thursday morning.

According to authorities, Hanif Thompson, who authorities said was the gunman, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for felony murder and ten years for the unlawful possession of a handgun. Karif Ford and Kevin Roberts, who pleaded guilty to first-degree carjacking charges, were each sentenced to 20 years in prison. They both must serve at least 17 years before being eligible for parole.

According to officials, in December 2013 Dustin Friedland, a 30-year-old Hoboken attorney, was killed after his Range Rover was carjacked in a parking garage of The Mall at Short Hills.

A lawsuit was filed against the mall’s owners, by Friedland’s widow who alleged that the negligence of security at the mall led to her husband’s death.
