BREAKING ELIZABETH NJ: Mayor Speaks About Suspicious Device (Video)

According to the Mayor, at approximately 9:30 this evening, to men were walking in the area of North Broad Street and Julian Place when they noticed a package in a waste paper basket.

The men took the package out of the waste basket as they believed that it was something of value the mayor said.

The men then walk under a nearby arch of the railroad tracks where they went around the corner, nearing an SUV where they came across a pipe with wires connected to it.

The men immediately dropped the package and made their way to police headquarters to report their findings the mayor said.

This prompted a large scale police investigation that involved emergency responders from Elizabeth, Union County, and the New Jersey State Police.

Authorities located the device and immediately contacted the Union County Bomb Squad to examine further.

The mayor said, a drone indicated that the device could possibly be a bomb.

Authorities are in the process of removing the device from the area.

All Northeast Corridor trains have been shut down for the investigation.
