NJ Basketball Hall of Famer, Newark Native Dies

The Newark and NJ athletic communities are mourning the passing of Newark native and Stockton University Hall of Famer Mr. George Briscoe.

Briscoe passed away Sunday morning.

George Briscoe, a Stockton University basketball star in ‘1988 was a two-time NJAC First Team selection (1987-88) who scored 787 points in two seasons at Stockton.

According to Stockton University officials, Briscoe directed Stockton to its first two NJAC championships as the team’s point guard in 1986-87 and 1987-88. He averaged 13.2 points per game and shot 55.1 percent from the floor in the Ospreys’ 1986-87 NCAA Final Four campaign.

Briscoe then scored 16.1 points per game in leading Stockton to its second straight NJAC crown and NCAA Tournament berth in 1987-88.

George Briscoe is the father of former Roselle Catholic High School and University of Kentucky player Isaiah Briscoe.

University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari said the following in a Facebook post: ”‪George Briscoe, Isaiah’s father, passed away. He was one of the great fathers of any player that I’ve coached here. He loved his son, yet he let me coach him. I loved him and I’m going to miss him.‬

‪Please keep Isaiah and his family in your prayers.”

George Briscoe was also loved by many NJ basketball athletes whom he coached in Newark and around the state.
