Attempted Carjacking in Newark's South Ward Leaves Man Dead

A reported attempted armed carjacking that happened in a residential area in the city's South Ward has authorities on the scene investigating a fatality.

Police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the 60's block of Leslie Street at around 8:45 a.m. where they arrived to find a male victim struck by gunfire multiple times.

The man was pronounced dead a short time later.

Residents told our RLS Metro Breaking News reporter that the victim is an adult working male who may have arrived home from working shortly before the shooting.

According to residents, at around 8:45 a.m., about five loud popping noises rang out on the block forcing them to their windows and front porches.

A spokesperson from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the homicide with additional info to follow later today.
