Arrest Made in Brutal Attack of Mentally Distressed Newark Man

Police in Newark took a man into custody and charged with a brutal assault that occurred on a street in the's city's downtown on Tuesday.

According to a preliminary statement released by Newark Police officials to RLS Media, the incident happened in the vicinity of 942 Broad Street, where authorities say the victim was attacked after an incident occurred at the Dr. Chicken Shack.

Police say an altercation occurred in the restaurant prompting a fight that ended up across the street where the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim.

According to witnesses -who posted the victim's image that went viral on social media- they identified him as "Gary," who they say is around the age 60-years-old and emotionally distressed.

Witnesses say the suspect allegedly used a blunt object to strike the victim during the altercation that involved the store's window being smashed.

Newark Police would not confirm the nature of the attack or the suspect involved but have launched an active and ongoing investigation.
