97-Year-Old Woman Rescued from Newark High-Rise Building Fire; Investigation

Newark

Newark Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that ignited inside a high-rise building in Newark on Thursday night.

According to preliminary reports, residents inside 10 Hill Street were told to shelter in place after occupants inside the building contacted firefighters after seeing smoke coming from the 5th floor of the 21-story structure.

Crews arrived at the scene and isolated the small fire to an apartment, which did not extend to any other residences, according to officials.

Several residents were observed outside of the building with blankets due to the frigid temperatures, but fire officials did not announce an overall evacuation.

Firefighters rescued a 97-year-old woman from an apartment on the 6th floor as smoke began to fill that portion of the building and the stair cases.

Crews placed the fire under control in under 30 minutes with no severe injuries reported.
