24-Hour Time Span Leaves Seven Shot, One Dead Around Newark

A violent 24-hour time span where gunfire erupted at several locations around the city left six people hospitalized and one person dead in Newark.

The latest shooting happened in the 600 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard, shortly before 4:30 a.m, where police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out.

Police arrived at the scene and found evidence that a shooting had occurred but no victim was located according to reports.

The victim was reportedly dropped off at University Hospital by private vehicle in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the back.

According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosector's Office, the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities are investigating a motive for the shooting.

Earlier in the evening, gunfire erupted in the 200 block of South 6th Street, shortly before 10:15 p.m., sending police to the scene where they found a male victim shot at that location. The victim was taken to University Hospital where police observed a second male victim who stated that he was also shot at the South 6th Street locations.

One of the victims was treated at the hospital and released. The other will undergo surgery this morning.

A shooting in the 300 block Bergen Street had police on the scene at around 8:30 p.m. where officers set up a crime scene that closed off several blocks to traffic.

A search of the area had police locating two victims suffering gunshot wounds.

The victims were transported the short distance to University Hospital where doctors treated the pair for non-life threatening injuries.

Police searched the area for evidence and a possible suspect.
