1. Increased Law Enforcement Efforts: Municipalities across North Jersey, including towns in West Essex County, have intensified their enforcement of school bus safety laws. This move aims primarily to protect children traveling from home to school.

2. Legal Consequences for Non-Compliance: Ignoring the flashing red lights on a school bus is illegal and dangerous. According to NJ.gov, such negligence has led to the deaths of 414 students nationally over the past 32 years.

  • First Offense:

    • At least $100 fine
    • Up to 15 days in jail
    • Up to 15 days of community service
    • Addition of five points to your driver's license
  • Subsequent Offenses:

    • At least $250 fine
