West Caldwell Restaurant Evacuated After Suspicious Odor Leaves Patrons with Breathing Issues

The West Caldwell health inspector will have to clear a local restaurant before it can open again after a suspicious odor had several patrons feeling sick with some reportedly having some breathing issues.

According to preliminary reports, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders rushed to the Original Pancake House in West Caldwell after a room filled with patron began to cough uncontrollably with some even vomiting and complaining of throat irritation.

Crews arrived at the scene and assisted some exposed victims, but there were no severe injuries reported.

Reports that someone activated pepper spray inside the establishment was immediately knocked down by city officials who stated that the cause is under investigation.

The following is a statement released by fire officials: "After an extensive investigation by the West Caldwell Fire Department and the Nutley Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, it was determined that there was no hazard present. The West Caldwell Health Department is on scene making an inspection and it is expected that the business will reopen shortly."

Original Pankake House officials did not immediately comment regarding the matter.
