Transformer Explosion Closes Broad Street in Downtown Newark

Emergency responders are on the scene of a transformer explosion in downtown Newark at this time.

The underground explosion happened at the intersection of Broad Street and Rector Street at around 1:30 p.m. sending crews to the scene where a church and several businesses had to be evacuated.

Broad Street was closed and detoured from Raymond Boulevard in one direction and Central Avenue from the other direction as a safety precaution in case manhole covers began to explode.

PSEG rushed to the scene to assess the damages and shut power off to the area.

There were no injuries.
