Car Fire Shuts Down Lanes on Route 1 in Newark

A car fire on a highway in Newark closed lanes while firefighters battled flames on June 22.

Police say it happened in the southbound lanes of Route 1 near the ramp from Route 22 around 4:09 a.m.

Firefighters arrived and found a fully involved fire coming from an unoccupied car in the southbound lanes. Crews were able to get the blaze under control in under ten minutes with no injuries reported.

Traffic was being diverted around the car while arson investigation worked the scene searching for the cause of the fire.

All lanes were reopened just before 4:45 a.m.
