Van Bursts Into Flames After Crashing Into Pole in Kearny

Authorities are investgiating a crash that had a vehicle lose control and slam into a pole in a neighborhood in Kearny during the overnight hours.

According to preliminary reports, emergency responders were dispatched to Argyle and Belleville Pike at approximately 12:21 a.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle crash with possible trapped occupants and fire.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and found a burning overturned van after the driver slammed into a pole which brought down power lines.

The force of the crash caused the engine of the van to dislodge totally and was found a couple of feet from the vehicle.

Several bystanders at the scene said that patrons at a nearby bar assisted the female driver of the van our of the vehicle shortly before it fully ignited into flames. The woman did not suffer serious injuries according to reports.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in under 45 minutes with a search of the van for trapped occupants coming back negative.

According to 511-NJ traffic and transportation, as of 2:19 am, the intersection will be closed -due to the crash- in both directions on NJ-7 between Schuyler Avenue and NJ-17/Ridge Roads in Kearny. All lanes closed and detoured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Kearny Police.
